MDG: Alleviate hunger
Save hungry children and their mothers from eating trash and living on garbage heaps. Give children living in trashdumps food to fight their hunger.
We have found that the children and mothers who are at the trash dumps in the cities of developing countries are very malnourished. They look through the trash for bits of food to eat, and only eat the equivalent of perhaps a meal a day. The children are rather small for their age. Many children who eat food from the dumpsites suffer from diseases such as diarrhea.
We discussed this issue with school principals when enrolling the children in school. Principals have shared that this is a common problem. Students often faint in school from not having eaten in days. It is hard for the children to pay attention in class when they are hungry.
As a result, The Unforgotten also provides meal supplements to the children whom we support.

India
Meals Program
In areas such as Pune, India, where our children are enrolled in boarding school, meals are provided throughout the day and evening.

Zambia
School-Feeding Program
The Unforgotten Zambia Chapter has a school-feeding program, which was started due to the high incidence of children fainting and begging from other children. The children receive a balanced diet during lunch. Providing meals helps the children concentrate and perform in school while alleviating the financial burden on the families.
Family Meals Program
Wastepicker mothers struggle to provide their children a single meal per day. Sometimes the mothers in our program would use the loaned money to feed their children, instead of growing their businesses. So, to enable these women to focus their resources on growing their businesses, The Unforgotten Zambia Chapter has a family meals program, which provides each beneficiary family with 25 kg of simple high calorie maize meal on a monthly basis. This program has helped alleviate food shortages in homes.
The project currently has 30 households. Most of these are female headed households.

Sierra Leone
School-Feeding Program
The Unforgotten Sierra Leone Chapter provides the girls in the Aid Trash Dump Children Program with lunch. Providing meals helps the children concentrate and perform in school while alleviating the financial burden on the families.
